More Cafepress Stuff - C900 style!

After setting up the 10seStuff store on Cafepress.com, I decided to try my hand at a few Saab designs. This is the first one. I've ordered one for myself in the yellow-on-blue combination; the graphic doesn't look so good on the website and I'm hoping that the shirt is better in person.

So that I'm not pinching Swade's customer base, I'll donate my markup on these towards his trip to Sweden as well.

Stay tuned -- a classic 900 hatch can't be far behind!

Vanderbilt Beats Kentucky for the fourth time in a row!

Vanderbilt wins in dramatic fashion at Memorial Gym against Kentucky 67-65. The Commodores trailed the entire way until Derrick Byars's shot after a missed free throw put Vanderbilt up by two points with only 29 seconds left in the game.

The Commodores are now in sole possession of second place in the Southeastern Conference and should be playing in the NCAA tournament as a 4 or 5 seed.

Go 'Dores!!!

Let's get Swade to Sweden -- with some humor!

I'm sooooo self-entertained!

Close to home, indeed!

Rebuttal to Modest Mouse

Modest Mouse. A growing icon of indie pop, they've paid their dues and written some pretty smart, engaging songs. Believe me when I say that I'm a fan. Of their music. In my book, anyone that's OK with Mark Kozelek is OK with me musically.

However, the boys from Issaquah, Washington have rubbed me that wrong way with a recent song entitled "Bukowski". The tune is catchy, and the lyrics are delivered in a rythmic sing-song style which makes it sound a little more like a poem set to lyrics than the rest of the songs from the CD, Good News for People That Love Bad News. After dwelling on the lyrics for a while, I really began to dislike the song because it contemptuously taunts God and his role as master.

If you missed the earlier link, see the lyrics here.

My response? To write another verse. That Modest Mouse should think about. A lot.

If you can't see the beginning and end,
Question but you can't defend,
Mock Him that you should call friend,
My problem is I can't see,
Well who would wanna be? Who would wanna be so arrogant?
Well who would wanna be? Who would wanna be so arrogant?

God lives. And He doesn't like being called names. In fact, He said that rejecting His spirit is the only thing that He will not forgive. (Matthew 12:30-32)

Jovenes en Camino

We've just finished a minor project for Jovenes en Camino, a refuge for homeless, abandoned boys in impoverished Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Along with Moises and his staff at the church in Tegucigalpa, this is our philanthropy. 100 boys that will not succumb to the worst of this world. 100 boys that will stand strong as men to save others like them. We are such a small part of this work, but if all do something small, big things can happen.

The killer Saab 96.

This Saab 96 has been modified -- a lot.

V6 from a Euro Ford, twin turbo chargers, fender flares, air dam, rear whale tail, oversized wheels, big brakes, racing seats, the works. It's even got a bank of audio equipment in the rear in lieu of a seat! To fit all of this stuff into the 96, the owner relocated the radiator and battery to the trunk with some side scoops for air intake.

Even though the 96 lived through the 1970's in Europe, the original car was designed in the very early 1960's. This take on it seems thoroughly modern, in a retro design way. Something like a 'new' VW Beetle or one of those Toyota FJ Cruisers.

Enjoy!

Take note: this doesn't happen often.

It's not often that Eggsngrits will praise Pat Forde (pronounced for-DEE, s'il vous plait), because it seems that he's a little pompous and self-important during his short appearances on ESPN. However, this week he's interviewing Derrick Byars, Vanderbilt forward, giving Vanderbilt the NCAA tourney love, and dissing Wayne Newton's plastic surgery all in one column.

We likes. We likes a LOT.

The Crane Wife

The Decemberists. One of independent pop music's current great bands.
Part Neutral Milk Hotel, part Nick Drake, part late 1980's R.E.M., these folks have a sound all their own.
Have a listen and see.

Saab Performance Team in Taiwan!

I agree with Zac, why should we care about Amaechi?

John Amaechi is a former NBA player. And, if you haven't been following the news, he's announced to the world that he's a homosexual man, and he was homosexual when he was in the NBA. He's been hailed as 'courageous' (by some surprising people) and his critics have been decried by the print and television media writers. Why?

To start with, he's a homosexual. That is, he has sex with other men. Why did any of us need to know this in the first place? I certainly don't. He's been out of the NBA for some time, so it can't relate to basketball directly. Certainly, his mediocre NBA career doesn't merit Hall of Fame consideration, so it won't affect that selection process.

Secondly, why do the writers instantly defend him for this admission? To me, he's been duplicitous during the time leading up to this announcement. He's been lying by omission.

Finally, it seems self-serving. He's written a book and he's involved with various business ventures that should benefit from the temporary celebrity that he's gained from this inflammatory admission. I say that he's using his homosexuality for shock value for gain, not for any higher purpose.

Next, about Tim Hardaway. Again, if you've been under a rock, Mr. Hardaway, who is a legitimate Hall of Fame candidate claimed during an interview with Dan LeBatard that he 'hates gay people' and that he would 'not want a gay teammate'.

In my view, Tim Hardaway is the courageous one, not John Amaechi. Let me explain.

Tim Hardaway, although in a crude way, told the truth, the absolute truth.
John Amaechi lied. For years.

Tim Hardaway stood up for his beliefs even though it cost him plenty.
John Amaechi stood up for his beliefs only when it benefited him.

Tim Hardaway had plenty to lose.
John Amaechi had nothing to lose.

John Amaechi, you've solidified your place in history now. You've admitted that you have sex with men. Wow. Boy, that really makes a HUGE difference.

NOT.

I wish that I had a trunk monkey.

If you look closely you'll see that this monkey looks a lot like Bonzo.

(Check out what the monkey is reading in the theft retrieval edition.)

It's all about William Shatner's toupee.

Way funny.

Cub Scout Pack 241 Blue & Gold Banquet!

What a great celebration of Cub Scouting with our boys! We had barbeque from BB's BBQ, entertainment by Safari Greg and we all decorated the tables with a safari theme. Good times!

Robert baked and decorated the infamous Snake Cake that garnered the highest bid at the cake auction to raise money for Walnut Grove Elementary School. Way to go Robert!
