Why is the San Francisco Chronicle talking about the Confederacy?

Let a Southerner, a conservative or a pundit refer to the Confederacy as a voting block in public and the press would rip them to shreds.

Apparently, the San Francisco Examiner Chronicle, a liberal publication from one of the country's most liberal cities, can openly refer to the Confederacy as a place where Senator Obama can pick up some votes.

If the editorial were written by a Republican, the press would be all over him or her for "inflammatory and racist rhetoric".

Bias, people. You've got two media standards in this country -- one for liberals and one for conservatives.

Yeah, it's as if the author's point had anything to do with the difficulty of a black candidate picking up votes amidst persistent racism in once slave-holding South. The documented racial demographics of Southern voters by parties back up the concerns.

Not to mention that the Republican's Southern Strategy involved exploiting and exacerbating this very racism.

Point out the persistence of racism isn't racist.

Oh, and the newspaper in question here is the Chronicle, not the Examiner.

Bang up job as usual.

Wow. You completely missed the point -- but, boy, you've got things figured out.

What scares me most -- people like you vote. You bring up racism in the South like people are being actively lynched in the streets. That's your "ism", isn't it? You are prejudiced against Southerners!! A hater!

You also seem to have a dislike of Republicans. Claim that they've exploited race in the campaign against Obama. I've not seen that in evidence, but I will take you at your word.

Do you think that Obama has used race in his campaign? How about Senator Clinton? They've both used race pejoratively, that's the answer. Senator Clinton implied that Obama wasn't "Christian" enough for white working class voters since he's got a Muslin heritage, and Obama claimed that a vote for a white man would be a step back in the fight against racism in the United States.

You see, these things don't get much press. Because they come from people that the media attempts to protect: the left-leaners.

The media in this country leans left. It's fact. That's the point.

Corrected the thing about the paper, though.

PS. Turned off anonymous comments. If you won't identify yourself, your rhetoric is just whining, not debate.
